Scholarship Overview
The Centre of African Studies, in partnership with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, is offering one PhD scholarship to African nationals.
This scholarship is focused on state capacities, governance, and bureaucracy for development.
Key areas of interest include public sector governance capabilities, political settlements, and the governance of state-owned enterprises.
Research proposals should emphasize the public sector, state governance, and development.
To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must first secure an unconditional offer for a PhD from SOAS.
Applications for the PhD should be submitted before January 2025 to meet the scholarship deadline of 31 March 2025.
Eligibility
The PhD must be within the following departments:
- Development Studies
- Law
- Economics
- International Relations/Politics
- Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD)
- Department for Financial and Management Studies (DEFIMS)
- Distance Learning: Centre for Financial and Management Studies (CEFIMS)

To apply for the scholarship, submit the following documents:
1. Unconditional offer from SOAS Admissions Office.
2. CV (include email address).
3. A two-page statement outlining your knowledge and interest in governance-related issues.
4. Research proposal (submitted to SOAS Admissions Office).
5. One academic reference (to be sent directly by the referee to ab17@soas.ac.uk ).
