The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun a two-week warning strike nationwide after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum it previously gave to the Federal Government.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, announced that the industrial action took effect immediately after the deadline elapsed at midnight.

He explained that the decision to embark on the warning strike was to compel the government to implement previous agreements and address the ongoing issues affecting public universities across the country.

The union had earlier, on September 28, 2025, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government as part of renewed efforts to resolve long-standing disputes within Nigeria’s university system.

ASUU noted that the strike became unavoidable after repeated engagements with government officials failed to produce any meaningful outcome.

Professor Piwuna said: “All ASUU branches are hereby instructed to down tools effective from 12:01 a.m . on Monday, October 13, 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive, in line with the resolution reached at the last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.”
