The Federal Government has officially discontinued the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme. According to the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, the funds will now be used to improve Nigerian universities and polytechnics.

Why the BEA Scholarship Was Stopped
The government says Nigerian schools now offer the same courses students used to study abroad. Instead of paying for airfare, tuition, stipends, and healthcare overseas, funds will be redirected to:
- Upgrade school facilities
- Improve staff welfare
- Admit more students locally

What Local Support Remains Available
Current BEA scholars will continue to receive support until they finish. Other programmes still active include:
- Nigerian Scholarship Awards – For students in public universities and polytechnics
- Federal Bursary Awards – For students studying education
- Presidential Scholarships – For outstanding ex-NYSC members
- Student Loans – Interest-free loans for Nigerian university/polytechnic students

What About Foreign Scholarships?
Only fully funded international scholarships are allowed, covering:
- Tuition
- Accommodation
- Transport
- Minimum $500 monthly stipend
- Healthcare
These must come at no cost to the Nigerian government.

The Bottom Line
This decision is part of a broader plan to invest in local education and build a stronger university system at home.
