FG Restructures Leadership In Federal Universities

The Federal Government has approved major changes in the governing councils and leadership of federal universities across Nigeria. The restructuring involves dissolutions, reassignments, and new appointments in key institutions.

Details of the Restructuring

University of Abuja (Now Yakubu Gowon University)
- The governing council has been dissolved, affecting both external and internal members.
- Senator Lanre Tejuoso, previously Pro-Chancellor at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, is now the Pro-Chancellor.
- Prof. Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months but is not eligible for the substantive role.
- Prof. Maikudi has been removed as Vice-Chancellor.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
- Engr. Akin Ojo, formerly Pro-Chancellor of Federal University of Lokoja, is now Pro-Chancellor of UNN.
- Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned from UNN to the University of Uyo as Pro-Chancellor.
- Prof. Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months but is ineligible for the permanent position.
- The tenure of the current Acting Vice-Chancellor, ending on 14th February 2025, will not be renewed.

Other Key Appointments
- Alvan Ikoku University of Education – Senator Sani Stores appointed as Pro-Chancellor.
- Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka – Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi appointed as Pro-Chancellor.
- Federal University of Lokoja – Prof. Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi appointed as Pro-Chancellor.

Government’s Commitment
The Federal Government aims to enhance governance, transparency, and accountability in universities through this restructuring. The changes are expected to strengthen leadership and improve the management of tertiary institutions.
