The National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) has reaffirmed that its certificate is officially recognised and holds the same value as WAEC and NECO. Despite this, many universities still refuse to accept it, mainly due to lack of awareness.
Key Facts About NBAIS:
- Established since 1960, recognised nationally in 2011
- Became an independent examination board in 2017
- Offers Arabic and Islamic studies along with English, Mathematics, and Sciences
- Open to students from all religious backgrounds
Official Approval:
- Certified by the Federal Ministry of Education
- Approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC)
- Legally valid for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions
Challenges in Acceptance:
- Many universities, especially in the south, still reject NBAIS certificates
- Rejection often due to limited understanding of NBAIS’s status and standards
Where It’s Already Accepted:
- Public universities in Kano, Kaduna, and other northern states
- Several federal institutions adhering to NUC regulations
- Over 1,200 affiliated schools in 26 states
Next Steps:
NBAIS is urging the federal government to launch a national awareness campaign. This will help ensure that all students with NBAIS qualifications are treated fairly during the admission process.
Equal recognition of all approved certificates will promote educational access, inclusiveness, and national development.
