Nigerian Maritime University Appoints New Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State, has officially appointed Professor Oluwafemi Flora Tobolayefa as the new Vice-Chancellor. She takes over from Professor Emmanuel Adigio, whose tenure ended in June 2025.

How She Was Appointed
The appointment was announced on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, by the Pro-Chancellor, Mr. Abdullahi Bardi, after a transparent selection process.
• 12 applications were received
• 6 candidates shortlisted and interviewed on June 17
• Professor Tobolayefa scored 78.4% , topping the list

Mr. Bardi confirmed that all due processes were followed, in line with federal university regulations.

About Professor Tobolayefa
She is a seasoned microbiologist and respected academic who:
• Was the Foundation Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at NMU
• Formerly served at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta
• Is the first female professor from the Gbaramatu Kingdom

Council's Appreciation
The university’s Governing Council expressed gratitude to:
• President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
• The Minister of Education
• NIMASA
• The National Assembly

Their collective support helped sustain NMU’s growth and academic development.

“This appointment reflects our commitment to strengthening NMU as a centre for maritime excellence,” Mr. Bardi said. The Council urged all staff, students, alumni, and community leaders to support the new VC in her mission to lead the university forward.
