Minister of Works, David Umahi, has vowed to protect the reputation of President Bola Tinubu’s administration amid growing controversy surrounding the demolition of properties linked to Winhomes along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway corridor.
Speaking in a video obtained by journalists, Umahi stated that the government would not allow the actions of any developer or company to damage Nigeria’s relationship with diaspora investors. He said the Tinubu administration remains committed to transparency, fairness, and the protection of both local and foreign investments.
According to Umahi, the demolition exercise carried out around the right of way of the coastal project was in accordance with due process, and affected property owners had been duly informed before any action was taken. He added that the government’s goal was to ensure proper urban planning and safeguard national infrastructure, not to target legitimate businesses.
The Minister, however, expressed concern that certain individuals and organizations were attempting to politicize the situation or use it to tarnish the image of the administration. He maintained that the federal government would not condone any act capable of discouraging investors or portraying the country as unstable.
Umahi further appealed to the media and public commentators to verify information before publication, stressing that misleading reports could harm Nigeria’s global investment appeal. He assured that President Tinubu’s administration is open to dialogue with genuine investors and will continue to create an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth.
Political analysts have described Umahi’s remarks as part of the government’s broader effort to maintain investor confidence and clarify issues surrounding the ongoing coastal highway project. The controversy over the Winhomes demolition has drawn mixed reactions, with some Nigerians supporting the enforcement of regulations, while others have called for a review of compensation procedures.
Umahi reaffirmed that the Ministry of Works remains focused on delivering quality infrastructure across the country, while ensuring that government actions align with international standards of transparency and accountability.
“We will not allow anyone to damage the image of this administration or discourage diaspora investors who believe in Nigeria’s development,” Umahi stated.
