What is the Yale Young African Scholars Program?

The Yale Young African Scholars Program helps African students prepare for university while nurturing leadership abilities. If you’re looking for a chance to improve your academic skills, gain university admission guidance, and connect with peers across Africa, YYAS is for you.

Program Dates for YYAS 2025

Choose between two enriching experiences:

- YYAS Online College Prep Workshop: 17 – 22 July 2025 (6 days).
- YYAS Residential Leadership Summit: 9 – 17 August 2025 (9 days) in Kenya.

What Does the Yale Young African Scholars Program Offer?

In 2025, YYAS will provide two program formats:

- Online College Prep Workshop: A virtual program to help you navigate the college application process.
- Residential Leadership Summit: An in-person summit in Kenya focusing on leadership, innovation, and personal growth.

Both programs are free of charge and offer resources like academic mentoring and leadership training.

Eligibility Criteria for the Yale Young African Scholars Program 2025

To apply for the YYAS 2025, you must meet the following requirements:

- Be 14-18 years old as of 17 July 2025.
- Demonstrate strong English proficiency.
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country (refugees residing in Africa may also apply).
- Currently attend school in an African country.
- Be in the 10th or 11th grade (or international equivalent).
- Graduate from secondary school between May/June 2026 and May/June 2027 (Northern Hemisphere) or between November/December 2025 and November/December 2026 (Southern Hemisphere).

Key Details About the Program

YYAS College Prep Workshop (Online)
- Six-day online program for around 200 students.
- Access via Zoom required.
- Upon completion, you will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion.

YYAS Residential Leadership Summit (Kenya)
- Nine-day in-person summit for around 100 students.
- Held in Kenya, with leadership development and 21st-century skill-building activities.
- Completion of the summit grants you a YYAS Certificate of Completion.

Both programs are tuition-free, with accommodation, meals, and educational materials provided for Residential Summit participants.

Travel Grant for the Leadership Summit

Need-based Travel Grants are available for students attending the YYAS Residential Leadership Summit. Applicants outside Kenya may be eligible. If you do not qualify, you’ll need to arrange your own travel.

Application Timeline for Yale Young African Scholars Program

Two application deadlines are available for YYAS 2025:

- Early Action Deadline: 24 October 2024, 11:59 PM ET (decisions by 20 December 2024).
- Regular Decision Deadline: 20 January 2025, 11:59 PM ET (decisions by 20 March 2025).
